50: Five years of getting dumber for the better

A series of short stories that illustrate a world of working in nonprofits, flying in first class with gas, recording an album, running from the front door to the mailbox, skipping stones across a glass table, visiting the afterlife, and enjoying the company of a yellow chair.

Five years after turning 45, I turned 50, and I write about it.

Excerpt:
Somewhere between sharing historical facts with my older brother and drawing me spaceships, my dad lifts his 3-year old into his lap and the 3-year old asks, “Dad, when are you coming home?” And even at 8-years I know the question hits my dad like a Lyle Alzado blind-side sack—much worse than the physical pummeling he took when he first arrived behind bars—glasses crushed. “I don’t know,” my dad responds, and I wish I never heard this—make-believe hope extinguished. I sulk for a second and shake it off like I would a concrete burn from a Big Wheel wipeout on the driveway. ​​

Rebooting Social Studies, 2017

Those facts. Those dates. Those four walls. Those still and petrified fossils of traditional history courses. Sure, it's history, but do we have to turn to tradition for guidance? Let's make it worth the students' time. Let's give them something to take beyond their high school experience. Let's reboot history.

The goal of the social studies is to provide students with the tools necessary to be active and productive citizens. We're here to assist students in developing problem-solving skills that are relevant to their future, and this can be done whether we teach about Ancient Athens or modern Akron, Ohio.

So, take a moment, take a torch to the bland, and create something energizing and refreshing.

I'm good at designing and organizing meaningful experiences that help enhance a sense and understanding of community. Whether for high school students or professionals, I enjoy creating atmospheres for deep conversation and learning. To that end, I collaborate with others and brainstorm innovative ideas to ensure valuable experiences for all involved, and I've also got skills in:

1. Leadership. Guide education into the next century by providing  students and professionals with real-world and leadership experiences in their community.

2. Storytelling. Facilitate a safe environment that encourages conversation, while creating an interactive and curious atmosphere that energizes excitement. 

3. Networking. Connect students and local experts with the goal of reforming and exciting the educational world.
